2001 graduate, Odontology
This piece comes to you as a token of remembrance of the extraordinary days I spent in the University of Health Sciences/Lithuania (previously known as Kaunas University of Medicine) during my dental study period. I was born in Edinburgh, and this is where I would consider being my home. However, I moved around a lot when I was young, and I have had my fair bit of encountering different cultures. One of the main reasons why I got trained in Kaunas as opposed to a university in the UK was my passion for travelling and exploring the world. I owe my achievements to date to the strong foundation I had at the beginning of my career in Lithuania, having completed a degree in Stomatology in 2001, followed by a degree in Prosthodontics in 2004. I then moved back to the UK and continued my postgraduate learning journey where I have accomplished various prestigious memberships diplomas; Diploma in membership of Joint Dental Faculties from the Royal College of Surgeons England (MJDF RCS Eng), and then a Diploma in membership of Primary Dental care from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (MPDC RCSEd) and I have recently achieved my Masters in Restorative Dentistry with Merits from the University of Edinburgh/Dental Institute. I am now a Senior Dental Officer with the British Army travelling the world and practising dentistry at its very best and commanding respect and recognition in my field of expertise. I feel incredibly privileged to have had the opportunity to live in Lithuania, where I finished my degree and met the love of my life and made friends for life. I bow before all my teachers at this University who shaped my future and the present. Thanks to you all again!
Anu Varughese
2019 graduate, Advanced nursing practice, MSc.
‘It’s a great opportunity that I could study here and make my professional career more directed towards the advanced nursing stream. It’s hard for me to express in words the gratitude to everybody who helped me to complete my Master’s. So I won’t forget my studies and life at the LSMU and Kaunas. It’s my privilege to be a part of the LSMU alumni.’
Alan Bareiss
Medicine (Germany)
“Coming to study to Kaunas was an opportunity and a challenge in one. Looking back after living here for more than three years makes me smile. Of course there were some obstacles to overcome but they are outweighed easily by the many international friends who have become my family. Abstract medical concepts have become clear thanks to the problem based learning approach applied at the University and the country has changed from “somewhere in eastern Europe” to a place worth living in.”
Ann Rameshkumar
Medicine (Sri Lanka)
“I believe that the LSMU has made me a more confident and independent individual. It has opened the doors that I had never thought could be accessed. Most importantly, I'm in love with what I'm studying right now. There is a lot of practical experience as well as many placement opportunities especially for me, a Sri Lankan. Because graduating with a European degree allows me to work not only in my country but also in Europe. Finally, the most important thing for me about the University is the chance to grow as a person as well as develop academically.”
Alina Pugatcheva
Veterinary Medicine (Finland)
“The LSMU has changed my life completely. I am forever grateful to this university for giving me a chance to study veterinary medicine and making my childhood dream come to life. When the time came to move to Kaunas, it felt natural for me to begin a new chapter of my life here. I accepted my offer in a heartbeat and I have never looked back on my decision. My time here can be compared to a rollercoaster as there have been many ups and downs along the way, some bigger than the others, but through this, I have grown so much as a person and have met incredible people from all over the world and bonded with amazing friends who share the same passions as me. What I appreciate about my studies here is that the study groups are small and the professors are always trying to help you as much as possible. Acquiring a Veterinary Medicine degree in Kaunas gives me numerous opportunities to work abroad in the future and to get necessary contacts with international colleagues for future networking.”

“Studying at the LSMU is a great experience. The University provides tools necessary to develop skills and obtain knowledge in various areas in life. Students have their own voice in the educational process and professors are nice and friendly. Being an international student gives me the possibility to meet people from all around the world, learn about their culture, traditions and way of life.”
Durckheim Blessing
Medicine (Sweden)
“As a medical student with very medical background I find LSMU being a very inspiring university, not only due to its teaching system but also due to the opportunities it provides. The university has a wide access to resources, hands-on training and many opportunities for me to learn as much as I need, it has helped me understand myself better and equipped me with all the knowledge I need to become a great Medical Doctor in the nearby future.”
